Method development and validation for the determination of low level estrogens in synthetic effluent by exact matching isotope dilution mass spectrometry

Scene PicThis report relates to work carried out under project O4- Improved measurement of clinical environmental toxins of the NMS Chemical and Biological Metrology programme.

There is a high level of concern that steroid estrogens in wastewater can have significant endocrine disruptive effects at extremely low levels (sub ng L-1).  Legislation to control these substances in water at these levels is likely to be introduced in the next decade.  This will stretch current analytical technology and action needs to be taken now to develop an appropriate measurement system, comprising of methods and certified reference materials (CRMs) to enable the legislation to be enforced.

This report focuses on a developed and validated methodology for the analysis of low level steroids in waste water.
