Increased Expression of Liver Markers in Primary Cells Grown in a 3D Cell Culture Environment
This poster relates to work carried out under project DD3 - Cell based tests for predictive toxicology (Predictive toxicology) of the NMS Chemical and Biological Metrology programme.
Standard cell culture models place cells on flat tissue culture plastic, supporting cells by giving them a substrate on which to attach and grow. In the body however, cells are supported in an extra-cellular matrix which allows them to communicate and signal to each other in 3-dimensions (3D). Recent studies suggest that recreating a more tissue like environment using 3D cell culture can improve cell behaviour. This poster describes the effects of maintaining hepatocytes in 3D cell culture on cell viability, morphology and activity of phase I metabolising enzymes.
The poster was presented at the British Toxicology Society Annual Congress, held at the University of Warwick on 22nd-25th March.
