Development of generic biomarker protein standards

Development of generic biomarker protein standards v1This poster relates to work carried out under project DD1 - Quality metric toolkit for biomarker discovery and validation (Biomarker metrics) of the NMS Chemical and Biological Metrology programme.

Biomarkers are useful as indicators of normal biologic processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacologic responses to a therapeutic intervention. In many instances multiple biomarkers need to be considered to give a dataset capable of predicting a phenotypic end-point. Such multiplex assays pose new problems for assay QC and validation in terms of determining sensitivity, accuracy, robustness and other performance indicators. This is further complicated by the natural broad range of proteins in serum which challenges the detection of these low-level analytes.

This poster describes the construction of a panel of non-human protein “biomarker standards” and the demonstration of applicability for measuring the performance characteristics of two antibody-based detection methods (Luminex and Meso Scale Discovery).

The poster was presented at the GTCBio Biomarkers Discovery conference held in Ireland in September 2008.
